How we rate places

We rate kitchens on one question: how likely is a coeliac to get glutened here? Food quality is a separate matter.

The four tiers

  • 100% gluten-free23 places

The whole kitchen is gluten-free, according to ACECOVA’s list of exclusively gluten-free places or the venue’s own menu or website.

Kitchens still make mistakes, and some sell regular beer or packaged goods: tell staff you are coeliac.

  • Coeliac-association advised42 places

Gluten is on the premises, but a coeliac association lists this place: ACECOVA’s current list of places it has reviewed, or FACE naming this outlet in its programme.

Shared premises: tell staff you are coeliac when you order. A chain’s FACE agreement alone does not put an outlet in this tier.

  • GF protocol / separate prep10 places

No association lists this outlet, but the venue or its chain describes a protocol: separate prep, its own fryer or trained staff.

The venue’s own claim, not checked by anyone else: ask how cross-contact is handled.

  • GF options — ask68 places

Gluten-free dishes are on the menu, but how the kitchen handles cross-contact is unknown.

Not a gluten-free kitchen: ask staff about cross-contact before you order.

Each tier has its own shape as well as colour — a full disc, a tick, a half disc, a dashed ring — and the words are always written out, so the tiers read the same in greyscale or with colour-blindness.

How we know

Every place starts from public listings: ACECOVA’s lists of the establishments it has reviewed, FACE’s page of advised chains, coeliac directories, OpenStreetMap and local blogs. Directories, blogs and reviews only tell us where to look. They never set a tier on their own.

What each tier needs

A tier needs a source we can link to and quote. 100% gluten-free: ACECOVA lists the place as exclusively gluten-free, or the venue’s own menu or website says the whole kitchen is gluten-free. Coeliac-association advised: the place is on ACECOVA’s current list, or FACE names this outlet in its programme. A chain’s FACE agreement alone is not enough: those outlets are rated on the chain’s own published protocol (Protocol) or as Options. Protocol: the venue’s own menu or website describes how it keeps gluten-free food apart. Options: the venue’s menu, allergen chart or listing shows gluten-free dishes. Each place page shows this under “How we know”: the kind of source (independent list, venue’s own statement, venue claim or community report), a quote, the link and the date.

Menus, prices and allergens are copied only from what venues publish (web menus, PDF cartas, allergen charts, delivery listings). Each dish carries a badge: solid badges (GF: Gluten-free (venue label) GF version: GF version available (ask for it)) repeat what the venue says; outline badges (Naturally GF: Naturally GF ingredients (our inference, not a kitchen claim) Ask: Ask: hidden gluten risk) are our own reading of the ingredients and never a kitchen claim. Naturally-GF dishes are not counted as gluten-free.

We currently track 143 open places and 966 gluten-free menu items. Sources last checked 30 Sept 2026.

What we do not check

We do not visit or inspect kitchens. Chain outlets are not checked one by one, and a chain agreement does not prove that every branch follows it. Staff, suppliers, recipes and menus change, branches open and close, and a listing can go out of date between checks. A tier tells you what the sources said on the day we read them.

The audit

On 30 September 2026 we re-read the source behind every open place’s tier: ACECOVA’s lists dated 24 and 21 September 2026, FACE’s page, and each venue’s own menu, allergen chart, website or delivery listing. We quoted what each one says. Where the evidence did not support a tier we moved the place down; we moved places up only when ACECOVA’s current list carries them. Places with no usable evidence were taken off the site. Each place page shows the date its sources were last checked. There is no scheduled re-check yet.

What this isn’t

This is not medical advice. Kitchens change staff, suppliers and recipes, and even a 100% gluten-free kitchen can make a mistake. Always tell staff you are coeliac: no tier removes that need. Our Soy celíaco card says it for you in Spanish and Valencian.

Report a problem

If something here is wrong, or a place has changed, email us. Every place page also has a “Report a change” link that fills in the place’s name.

Chains

National chains are listed branch by branch because practice varies by kitchen. Where a chain has a FACE agreement we say so, but we have not checked each outlet, so the agreement alone never lifts an outlet above Protocol.
